How to Improve Your Darts Aim & Accuracy

September 2026 7 min read Darts Club India

If you're eager to improve darts accuracy, you are in the right place. Hitting the treble 20 consistently isn't about natural talent; it is about repeatable mechanics and intense focus. Many players plateau because they rely on feeling rather than a structured throwing technique.

In this guide, we break down the proven strategies, drills, and mental approaches utilized by competitive players to lock in their aim and dramatically increase their scoring average.

1. Why Darts Accuracy Is a Learnable Skill

Accuracy in darts is purely the result of repeating an identical kinetic chain over and over again. Unlike sports that require reacting to a moving target, a dartboard remains perfectly still. If your stance, grip, drawback, and release are identical every time, the dart will land in the exact same spot every time. Therefore, improving your aim is fundamentally about removing variations from your throw.

2. Stance and Body Alignment: The Foundation of Accuracy

You cannot shoot a cannon from a canoe. Before you even lift your arm, your body must be anchored. Plant your dominant foot firmly against the oche. Your shoulders, hips, and front foot should form a stable line pointing toward the dartboard.

Keep your back perfectly still during the throw. If your shoulder dips or your head jerks forward as you release the dart, your accuracy will plummet. The only part of your body that should move is your throwing arm.

3. Grip Pressure: Finding Your Sweet Spot

As we've discussed in our article on common darts mistakes, gripping the dart too tightly restricts fluid movement. Find a grip that feels natural, using at least three fingers (thumb, index, and middle) for stability. Apply just enough pressure to maintain control, but keep your wrist and forearm completely relaxed. Tension is the enemy of accuracy.

4. The Release and Follow-Through

The release is where the magic happens. Your arm should act like a catapult. Draw the dart back smoothly toward your eye line, pause for a fraction of a second, and accelerate smoothly forward.

A flawless follow-through is critical. Upon releasing the dart, your arm must fully extend, with your fingers pointing directly at the target. Snatching the dart or dropping your arm immediately will kill the dart's momentum and accuracy.

5. Practice Drills to Build Consistency

Mindless throwing won't help you improve. Try these accuracy-building drills:

  • Round the Board (Doubles): Start at Double 1 and work your way to Double 20. Do not move to the next number until you hit the double. This forces you to throw under pressure and master the outer ring.
  • Grouping Drill: Aim your first dart at the Bullseye. Wherever it lands, aim your next two darts to hit as close to that first dart as possible. This trains pure muscle memory rather than target hunting.

6. Mental Techniques to Stay Accurate Under Pressure

In a match situation, anxiety tightens muscles and destroys aim. Develop a pre-throw routine—a specific breathing pattern or way you step up to the oche. When you feel pressure, focus entirely on the routine rather than the result. Visualize the dart entering the treble 20 bed before you throw it. Confidence directly translates to physical smoothness.

7. Using Coaching Feedback to Accelerate Improvement

Self-diagnosing throw errors is incredibly difficult because you cannot see your own mechanics in real-time. This is why joining a structured program at a darts academy is so beneficial. A professional coach can record your throw in slow motion, instantly identifying the minute wrist flicks or shoulder drops that are sabotaging your aim.
