Three darts. One target. 180 points. It is the highest score achievable in a single visit to the oche, and the referee's call of "ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY!" is the most electric sound in the sport of darts.
What a 180 Actually Is
A 180 consists of landing all three darts cleanly inside the narrow treble 20 ring: 60 + 60 + 60. Throughout the darts community, this is referred to as a "maximum", because no combination on the board can surpass it.
The 180 serves as a universally recognized benchmark that separates casual throwers from committed competitors. Professional players land them multiple times per match; club players remember their very first 180 for the rest of their lives.
Why the Treble 20, Not the Bullseye?
Beginners frequently assume that the bullseye is the highest-value target on the board. In reality, the inner bullseye awards 50 points, whereas the treble 20 awards 60 points.
Beyond the point differential, the treble 20 provides a significantly more forgiving margin of error:
- If your dart misses slightly high or low of the treble 20, it still lands in the single 20 bed for 20 points.
- Even an off-center deflection lands in the single 5 or single 1, keeping your score ticking over.
- By comparison, missing a bullseye can spray into any surrounding single segment (1 through 20) with far less scoring reliability.
Over a standard 501 leg, targeting the treble 20 generates a dramatically higher points-per-dart expectation, making it the bedrock of competitive darts worldwide.
Did You Know? The treble 20 bed measures only about 8 mm wide. Fitting three 6–7 mm dart barrels into that tiny opening requires both precise mechanics and smart flight aerodynamics.
The Physics of Tight Grouping
Landing one dart in the treble 20 is about good aim. Landing three darts in the treble 20 is about grouping — where equipment setup and mechanical consistency intersect:
- Flight and Trajectory: Larger standard flights provide greater lift and a steeper angle of entry, keeping the dart stable. Slimmer flights offer reduced drag for a flatter trajectory and occupy less physical space in the bed, reducing bounce-outs.
- Barrel Profile: Slim tungsten barrels (such as 85%–95% tungsten) have a noticeably narrower diameter than brass darts of identical weight. This slimmer profile allows all three darts to pack tightly together inside the treble ring.
- Entry Angle: Darts that enter the board at a slight tail-up angle leave the treble bed open beneath them, providing a "shelf" for your second and third darts to slide in safely.
Three Daily Drills to Land Your First 180
Drill 1: Round the Treble
Throw 20 darts exclusively at the treble 20. Count only the trebles hit, ignoring single 20s. Record your tally in a notebook every day. This trains muscle memory without score pressure and visually documents your progress over weeks.
Drill 2: The Grouping Test
Throw three darts at the 20 segment without worrying about whether they hit the treble or the single. Your sole goal is to get all three dart barrels touching each other. Tight grouping in the single 20 is simply an aiming adjustment away from a 180; scattered darts across the board represent an inconsistent release that must be resolved first.
Drill 3: The Fatigue Reset
Throw 30 sets of three darts at the treble 20, performing a deliberate full reset — stepping off the oche, resetting stance, gripping the barrel, and acquiring sightline — before every set. Most missed maximums happen late in a match when fatigue degrades your routine. This drill builds mental endurance.
